Volunteering
On site, our goal is for this event to run in as horizontal and self-managed a way as possible. That's why, in order to blur the line between volunteers & “consumers” of the festival as much as possible, ideally, all participants give a bit of their time to help run this festival.
The camp will be set up and taken down collectively. We’ll need help! We’ll need to put up marquees and stages, but also create the decor, imagine spaces and build infrastructure out of pallets according to our ideas!
We've calculated that if all volunteers work 2 hours a day, the festival should be able to run in a self-managed way.
Furthermore, any task can be adapted if you have a disability of any kind.
How it works in detail
- Everyone will be able to sign up for shifts for the entire festival from day 1
- Shifts will be 2 hours long
- The signups will be at the volunteering table inside of the camp
- If you can't make it for your shift, let the volunteering table know
- All shifts will have an adequate briefing at the volunteering table and also printed out at the place where the shift is taking place
Missions available
Volunteer Runner
- Fill gaps wherever extra hands are needed
- Run errands and deliver supplies between teams
- Step in for crews that are short-staffed
Entrance
- Welcome arrivals and check them in against the registration list, handing out bracelets for the days they signed up for
- Introduce people to the charter of the festival, and handing out the necklases for photography opt-in
- Tell people about the volunteering situation and where they should go to sign up
Parking Steward
- Direct vehicles to parking spots and keep access roads clear
- Help arrivals unload and guide them to the entrance
- Watch over the parking area and report issues
Bartender
- Serve drinks at the bar
- Receive tokens for payment
- Keep the bar stocked and the counter clean
Token Distribution
- Explain that the tokens are only used for the bar
- Exchange money for tokens at the token desk, under supervision of one of the organisers
- Track token stock and do end-of-shift counts
Awareness Team
- Be a visible, approachable point of contact during events
- Listen non-judgmentally to people who feel unsafe or harassed
- Escalate serious situations to the care team
Night Security
- Keep watch of the festival ground overnight while the camp sleeps, together with a responsable from the organisation
- Do regular rounds of the site and check entry points
- Wake the right people quickly in case of emergency
Kitchen Cook
- Help prepare meals for the whole camp
- Follow the menu and portion plan
- Keep the kitchen and your station clean and safe
Food Server
- Distribute portions of food to the people queuing, preventing food waste
- Keep the serving line stocked and moving
- Tidy the serving area between services
Kitchen Cleanup
- Wipe down surfaces
- Clean utensils like pots, pans, knives, boards, etc.
- Help pack down the kitchen at the end of the day
Waste Collection
- Empty the bins across the festival site
- Sort waste into compost, recycling and landfill
- Keep the site tidy as you go
Hygiene Shifts
- Clean and restock the toilets and wash areas
- Top up soap, paper and hand sanitizer
- Empty out the toilet reservoirs (protective sanitary gear provided). You will not be allowed to work a food-related shift for 24 hours
Stage Runner
- Helping hand of the stage manger, helping setting it up the stage between performances
- Carry equipment and supplies to and from the stage
- Relay messages between the stage manager and anyone they need to reach while they stay at the stage
Our structure
The BAF Camp is a self-managed event. We organise horizontally, with working groups for different aspects (Logistics, Care, Comms, ...) and a coordination working group. Decisions are made by consent and we advocate an anti-authoritarian attitude. The organizing group is made up of people learning together to create these kinds of events, so it is open to anyone. No skills are required.

GT Care
Research and put into practice processes to fight oppressive practices during the organization and the festival itself.
GT Communication
Manage social networks, website, external communication of the event.
GT Volunteers
Manage and coordinate festival volunteers.
GT Logistics
Plan the necessary equipment for the festival as well as the logistics of the site (tent locations, setup and dismantling, etc.)
GT Programming
Propose workshop themes for the festival programme and contact these collectives or people, collect contributions for the programme.
GT Money & Legal
Define a budget for the festival, contact donors, think about the legal protection of the festival and request the necessary authorizations.
GT Coordination
Supports other groups and ensures fluid communication between the different GTs.
